CONGRATULATING AND RECOGNIZING

HALEIWA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

2014 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL

Since 1982, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has honored more than 7,500 public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. This year, Haleiwa Elementary School has earned the distinction as an exemplary high performing school under the leadership of Principal Malaea Wetzel.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools recognition for Haleiwa Elementary School reflects the commitment and hard work of students, teachers, faculty and staff, families, and the community in their efforts to significantly increase academic achievement scores. This recognition was bestowed on Haleiwa Elementary despite attempts by the Hawaii State Department of Education to consolidate the school as part of a cost reduction strategy.

The ethnically diverse school of approximately 200 students, where 65% of the children are from financially disadvantaged homes, scored the highest proficiency in math in the public school system during the 2009-2010 school year. The academic population of pre-K to grade 6 had attained a 99% proficiency in math and a 91% proficiency in reading.

Haleiwa Elementary School’s vision to inspire all students to dream of compelling possibilities and to develop the skills, knowledge, and strength of character to bring those dreams to reality is evident in the creation of a sound educational environment grounded in the belief that ALL students CAN and WANT to learn.

The success of Haleiwa Elementary School has resulted in other schools requesting the Haleiwa Elementary School leaders to share its improvement plan and process. Principal Wetzel has also been asked to share leadership strategies and practices with complex area principals, and to assist the Hawaii State Department of Education with accreditation consultative support and for development of services for the elementary school environment.

Therefore, on behalf of the people of the City and County of Honolulu, the Honolulu City Council congratulates and recognizes Haleiwa Elementary School for perpetuating excellence in education and contributing to a brighter future for the next generation in our community. Further, the Council extends its best wishes to the students and faculty for success in all their future endeavors.
