Hawaii is the only state in the nation with a statewide Pedestrian Safety Month. Walk Wise Hawaii, the Hawaii State Department of Transportation’s pedestrian safety campaign partners with the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services, the Honolulu Police Department and private sector partners to promote pedestrian safety.

According to Walk Wise Hawaii, the number one reason for pedestrian accidents and fatalities is inattentive behavior of both drivers and walkers. Always pay attention while walking!

On August 5th, Walk Wise Hawaii was recognized by the Honolulu City Council to promote Pedestrian Safety Month. Council Chair Ernest Martin, Honolulu City Councilmembers and everyone in the Council Chamber took the Walk Wise Hawaii Pedestrian Pledge.

I pledge, as a good pedestrian,

to always look left,

to always look right,

to always look left again,

and continue looking

while crossing the street.
