KARSTEN THOT BRIDGE CLOSED THIS SATURDAY FOR HAZARDOUS TREE REMOVAL

27 08 2015

The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) advises Oahu motorists that all lanes will be closed on Kamehameha Highway in both directions between Whitmore Avenue and Kilani Avenue at the Karsten Thot Bridge on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., for emergency removal of Albizia trees. The work is being performed in advance of severe weather conditions.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and use alternate routes such as Wilikina Drive.

The work is being performed on the weekend in order to bring multiple crews together from around Oahu. For safety and visibility reasons the work will be done during daylight hours. One of the Albizia trees in question is only feet off the roadway and stands approximately 60 feet tall. The removal will prevent it from falling and causing damage or injuries.

Inspectors continue looking for other potentially dangerous trees near highways around the state.

HDOT appreciates the community’s patience as we ensure the safety of our roadways.
