Life is a journey often filled with unexpected turns and surprising twists. With the right attitude and generous spirit, the road can lead to happiness and fulfillment. Such is the experience of North Shore Kamaaina, Joe Green.

In 1977, an invitation from a friend living on the North Shore brought Joe to Hawaii for a visit that turned his life in a new direction. Joe got his start in the retail business at the swap meet and farther down the road, became the proud owner of the Surf N Sea building. Renting a corner room to establish his own surf shop, he went on to acquire a third of the building, then owning forty-nine percent and eventually buying out his partners to become sole proprietor.

At the time Joe bought the Surf N Sea building from its second owner, the building was condemned by the State as unsafe and was to be demolished. Just as he acquired the building piece by piece, Joe took the same approach with the structure by restoring and replacing beams, floors and walls to rehabilitate the building.

The iconic Surf N Sea has been in existence for 50 years and Joe has owned it for 37 of those years. Joe is well known for his love of the North Shore and his dedication to the welfare of the community. Over the years, Surf N Sea has sponsored the Pipeline Women’s Pro because he personally feels female surfers do not get enough recognition. He also sponsors Stand-up Paddling, Haleiwa SUP Race, The Haleiwa International Open, and the North Shore Menehune Contest to which he donates eleven custom boards for each of the division winners.

Not limited to sponsorships and donations for water sport competitions, Joe has also given back to the community in other ways. He purchased fifteen computers to donate to the Waialua High School computer lab when his daughter Mari, who now manages the shop, was a student there. He also donates monthly to the Once-A-Month Church and the North Shore Food Bank.

The Honolulu City Council expresses its congratulations to Joe Green on being named the 2015 North Shore Chamber of Commerce Kamaaina of the Year, and further expresses its sincerest appreciation for his service and dedication to the betterment of the North Shore community.
