High Surf Prompts Park and Road Closures on the North Shore

22 02 2016

IMG_3990.JPGDue to the high surf on the North Shore, there will be three road block points monitored by the Honolulu Police Department and Department of Emergency Management staff and volunteers: Kamehameha Highway and Haleiwa Road, Kamehameha Highway and Joseph P. Leong Highway and at Kamehameha Highway and Kuilima Drive. The road is open to local traffic and public transportation. The general public is asked to avoid the area.

Currently, Haleiwa Beach Park, Haleiwa Alii Beach Park, Sunset Beach Park and Waimea Bay Beach Park on the North Shore are closed. Makapuu Beach Park is in the process of being closed due to the debris from a 15’ – 18’ boat that has broken free of its mooring and been split in half washing up on shore.

There are reports of six foot surf washing across the road in Kaaawa. The section of the highway that was recently repaired by State Department of Transportation was inspected this morning and is holding up. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation in the area and may also close the road in the Windward area if conditions worsen.

The lifeguard station foundation at Laniakea Beach has been undermined, and earlier in the day a lifeguard was knocked off an ATV at Ke Iki Beach as he warned beach goers to leave the beach. One of the residents near Alligator Rock reported that the retaining wall to the property has collapsed.
