Traffic advisory: Synthetic Turf Pilot Project

1 03 2016

The City and County of Honolulu has begun installing synthetic turf at selected street medians, bulb-outs and turnarounds across Oahu. The work started yesterday, Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Panana Street median in Makakilo fronting Maukalani School.

Site selection was done through collaboration with the Department of Transportation Services and was based on ground covering condition and appearance, along with past difficulties regarding maintenance and irrigation. The approximate area for this pilot project is 2,110 square feet. These locations were chosen because they are difficult for city crews to reach and do not see a significant amount of foot traffic.

Sporadic lane closures may be required while hand digging of surface soil and vegetation grubbing takes place. The work is expected to be completed in the next few months depending on weather conditions.
